Game of Thrones fans…
Once upon a time, a long time ago…
Er, wait, how does the fairy tale go? You might be asking yourself this very question if you find yourself within the walled city of Dubrovnik Croatia. In fact, the city is so fairytale like, that the producers of the hit HBO show “Game of Thrones” use the location as a backdrop for many of its scenes. This is Kings Landing!
I should disclose that I do not own a TV and I’ve never watched Game of Thrones, but I know that it is a popular show. But whether or not you’re a fan of the TV show, you’ll still fall for the charms of this amazing place.
Dubrovnik is an ancient walled city on the Adriatic Sea, just across from Italy. It is one of the best preserved walled medieval cities in the world. The place is spectacular! Its no wonder HBO uses it as a backdrop. You’ll think you’re in a fairytale with its drawbridges and moats.
I arrived via cruise ship and took the free shuttle into the historic old section of town. An easy jaunt along the coast. You’ll step off the bus, pass through the drawbridge gates and into the cobblestone streets of Game of Thrones! (which I know nothing about).
Dubrovnik is a walled city with towering walls that stretch almost a mile and a half around it, featuring turrets towers and moats intended to protect it. The history dates back to the 7th century, or perhaps even earlier! Walking along the incredibly clean and well preserved streets, I fantasize about what it was like back in the days of ancient Greek sailors who needed an easy place to pull their boats in for the night. The small, rocky beach now features kayak rentals and swimming along the old walls of the fort, or just stroll along the dock that juts out into the harbor.
Explore the area of the Stradun, the main street which runs through the middle of the old town. Lined with shops and amazing architecture, you’ll be mesmerized by your surroundings. The street took shape after the city was destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1667. Back then Dubrovnik was called the Republic of Regusa between 1358 to 1808.
