As a musician performing aboard a cruise ship, I get a lot of requests! I love it! I have a huge variety of genres that I can play to try and honor peoples requests! But sometimes things don’t go as planned. I can’t know EVERY song. There are the drunk people who INSIST that you know something when you don’t -
“HEY, play that new Pink song”
“I don’t know that new one, but I can do a different Pink song”
“WHAT?!? How do you not know it”
Its a little too new, I haven’’t figured it out yet”
“I’ve only heard it once, I don’t really know how the melody goes”
“YOU KNOW IT - PLAY IT”
You can’t win with these people. :p
Then there are the people who request something and leave as you start to play it. When the song is done I usually say into the mic “OK that was for (then point to where they were) that man right, wait, where did they go?” These people are usually just passing by and they’ll stop to watch for a minute, yell out a request, then continue on they’re way once you start the song.
One time I was playing to a HUGE group of country music lovers. I had everyone whipped into a boot stompin, high energy FRENZY. It was a country roadhouse, PARTY atmosphere! A man came up and asked for James Taylor. The most chilled out, mellow thing you could ask for. I said, “Hmm, maybe” and he got MAD! If I play James Taylor now, the vibe will be killed! No!
I love it though. When I can play a song that means something to someone, then thats what its all about!
What do you want to hear?
